Reading- This week I read chapters 16-18 in The Tiger Rising. We worked on Stop, Notice, and Note Post-it notes for tough questions. The students learned that characters are complex and may seem one way in some relationships or settings, and another way in a different context. They also learned that readers look for text evidence that shows this complexity to build solid ideas about characters and books.

DSA / Vocabulary Study-This week we continued to work on building our 4th grade vocabulary. We worked with the words; participant and temporary. They also continued to create google slides of their vocabulary words during class.

Writing-This week we did a lesson about Show, Don’t Tell in writing. Students learned to use their senses to make the reader feel like are they are their story. The students did this by tasting a cupcake or an orange and then writing about it. The students enjoyed this lesson and then applied the Show, Don’t Tell to their personal narrative.

Reading- This week I read chapters 9-10 in The Tiger Rising. The students were very into the book.  We worked on Stop, Notice, and Note Post-it notes for Compare and Contrast. The students also learned that readers use the power of their minds’ eye to put themselves into the world of their books as they read.  They completed a picture in their Reader’s Notebook that included what the movie in their mind looked like for chapter 10 in The Tiger Rising.  At the end of the week we watched a powerpoint on the plot of a story.

DSA / Vocabulary Study-This week we continued to work on building our 4th grade vocabulary.  We worked with the words; precious, sluggish, discussion, and advances. The students took a test on Thursday over their vocabulary words. They also continued to create google slides of their vocabulary words during class.

Reading- This week I read chapters 4-8 in The Tiger Rising. The students were so into the book.  We worked on Stop, Notice, and Note post it notes.  The students did an excellent jotting down Memory Moments in the story as well as Again and Again; ideas, objects, words, and phrases in The Tiger Rising.  The students also learned that in addition to retelling chronologically, readers can do a synthesis retelling by retelling only part of the book they’ve just read, then summarizing the related backstory. We also started our partener book club.  The students are doing an excellent job reading intensely.  Ask your child all that it entails.

DSA / Vocabulary Study-This week we continued to work building our 4th grade vocabulary.  We worked with the words; precious, sluggish, and discussion. The students continued to create google slides of their vocabulary words.

Writing-The students learned that writers get ideas for stories by imagining the books they wish existed in the world and by thinking about issues in their lives. The students chose a seed idea and then began developing characters for their story with internal and external traits.

Reading- This week the students started their first unit in reading; Interpreting Characters. The students learned that people read intensely to grow solid ideas that are grounded in the text.  They also learned strong readers figure out confusing parts in books, note important things to talk about later, and do the work the author asks of them.  The students heard the first couple chapters of our read aloud book The Tiger Rising.  I continued to  benchmark the students to obtain their current reading level. I should be finished with that next week so we can start our partner book clubs.

DSA / Vocabulary Study-This week we continued to work with our four vocabulary words; compete, treacherous, conceal, and permanent. The students took a test on them on Thursday and our creating Google slides on their vocabulary word.

Writing-We started our unit called The Arc of the Story on Tuesday in writing. The class learned that fiction writers get ideas for stories from small moments in their lives.  The students generated lists in their Writer's Notebook of important people, places, and objects in their lives and then shared them with their writing partner.
