Getting to Know Ms. Stimecz
My name is Suzy Stimecz. I am honored to be your child’s third grade teacher this year. I love teaching and I am a lifelong learner. This is my 22th year teaching (17th with the Riverside schools). This year it is wonderful to have so many siblings as students. I have a strong background in the primary grades. I currently hold a Master’s in Early Childhood Education, a Reading Endorsement and a Master’s in Reading from Youngstown State University. I have also taught at the graduate level as an adjunct professor for Youngstown State University.
I take great pride in my work for the Riverside Schools serving on both the Building & District Leadership Teams, and I actively support our building CHECCO (Parent) organization.
I am a farm girl at heart, growing up on our family homestead about 1 hour north of Pittsburgh, PA. Go Steelers!! My dad still farms the land, raises sheep, chickens & beef cattle. He is known as the “Egg man” in our community as he delivers fresh eggs to his customers every Friday. We also have 2 miniature donkeys named Chocolate Kiss and Tiny Tim. I have a twelve year old son, Mason who is in the 7th grade at Memorial Middle School in Mentor. We love to visit the farm and spend as much time there as we can over the summer and on weekends.
You will notice many new and different things than ever before. Your child will be involved in Daily 5 Reading, Guided Reading and this year we will be embarking on a new and exciting journey through the Reading and Writing Units of Study written by Lucy Calkins. You may wonder why you don’t see many worksheets coming home as often as before - that is because we use notebooks, folders and student self-assessments, reflections, and goal setting sheets to document learning throughout the year. Your child’s progress will be evaluated by more authentic tools such as rubrics, checklists, conferences, group work, and teacher observations. There will still be times when your child will have to study his/her notes and re-read a chapter / unit for a test, but this will not be their only way of being graded. I believe that not everyone is a “test taker”, so daily performance and class participation is extremely important this year! Please encourage your child to raise his/her hand and get involved in class.
This year, I will be your child’s Language Arts & Social Studies teacher and Mrs. Layhew will be teaching Math & Science. This is an exciting new opportunity for your child to spend time with and learn from two third grade teachers. We will also be conducting parent/teacher conferences together this year in order for you to discuss your child’s progress with both of his/her teachers.
Our classroom is one in which teamwork and a sense of community is involved in everything we do. We are seated in groups & we share all school supplies and daily cooperative group activities are planned.
I will be keeping in close contact with you all year long. Please do the same with me. Anytime you have something you’d like to discuss with me, please feel free to contact me through the school office (354-4414), write me a note or send me an email firstname.lastname@example.org . You may also visit our classroom web page which can be found from the Riverside Local Schools web site.
Thank you in advance for all of your help and support at home as your child will be learning so much this school year and will need you to review, read and talk about what they are learning at home.
It’s going to be a terrific school year!!!!
